Perle Systems Case Study

Perle helps the International Herald Tribune
handle over three million words a day

JetStream 8500 Serial Server

"...the product which represented the best price/performance solution..."

Over a century ago, the New York Times established a European edition of its newspaper in Paris. It became the first truly international publication. One hundred years on, modern technology has globalized what is today called the International Herald Tribune (IHT). Printed in 11 cities and distributed in 164 countries, over three million words are sent each day to the IHT central computers in Paris from the four corners of the world.

To link its four commercial centers in Paris, London, Zurich and New York, the IHT chose an Ethernet Network as the optimal communications solution. This is supported by a local, fiber-optic sub-network in Paris, which can handle up to 152 users.

Providing this 152-port configuration are eight, 8-port Perle Modular Terminal Servers (now called JetStream 8500) and eleven, 8-port Perle Modular Terminal Adapters (MTAs). The reason for choosing Perle? According to the IHT: "Our choice was for the product which represented the best price/ performance solution to meet the International Herald Tribune's requirements. In practice, the product has exceeded our expectations".
