Chassis serial numbers will be distinct to allow support and service to easily identify the chassis. All chassis with serial numbers 310-02500 or greater will be shipped with the new version 7.00 firmware. 833 Manager software version 7.00 or higher will have the capability to convert existing configurations to a new Cisco text file format. This new configuration file format will no longer operate on 833IS servers running firmware lower than 7.00. The main components of the 833IS Version 7.00 Cisco Management Upgrade Feature Kit are: * 4 megabyte flash SIMM * 833IS Manager and Firmware diskette packet * 833IS User Guide * 833IS Cisco Management Upgrade Instructions This upgrade feature kit will also be used to upgrade existing RAS 3000 units to run 833IS version 7.00 or higher software. After installing this upgrade kit the RAS 3000 will then function as an 833IS unit and can be managed with version 7.00 or higher 833 Manager. Since this is a chargeable upgrade, release 6.xx will be supported until April 30, 2001. Version 7.00 833 Manager Changes ================================ * The 833 Manger is now a 32-Bit application and is supported under Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 2000. This means the manager is no longer supported under Windows 3.1 or Windows NT 3.51. NOTE: If you are using Windows 95 then you will need to verify that you have Windows Sockets 2.0 installed on your Windows 95 PC. For information on this Windows Sockets 2.0 for Windows 95 please refer to the following two Microsoft Web sites: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/1/08.ASP http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/ w95sockets2/default.asp * Version 7.00 or higher of the 833 Manager may no longer be used to configure or manage 833IS or 833AS servers running version 6.xx or earlier firmware. 833 servers running version 6.xx or earlier firmware will no longer show up in the managers server list. * The 833 Manager install now has the following three options: 1. Perle 833 Manager - Installs 833 Manager Program, TFTP Program and 833IS Firmware 2. Perle 833 TFTP Server - Installs TFTP Program and 833IS Firmware 3. Perle 833IS Firmware - Installs the 833IS Firmware * New configuration parameters, see manager online help for details: * Syslog parameters * Event Log filter * Encrypt Passwords * Server Password * The following parameters are no longer configurable and are set to the values indicated below: * PAP Parameters * Terminate Attempts (3) * Configuration Attempts (10) * NAK Count (10) * Use Magic Numbers (disabled) * Chap Parameters * Maximum Interval (300 seconds) * Minimum Interval (120 seconds) * Retry Timeout (3 seconds) * Retry Count (10) * New drag and drop for card assignment and group channel and modem assignment. * Some screens have been reorganized by grouping related parameters together using Window tab folders. * Management of IP 833IS servers * All IP 833IS servers need to be defined in the 833 Manager via the "Add IP Server" screen. If you are using Domain Name Servers (DNS) on the manager PC, then you can enter the name of the 833IS. The manager will resolve this name to an IP address. Manager and Manuals in English Only =================================== The 833 Manager and 833IS User Guide and other documentation will only be supplied in English. The 833IS Manager will be available in 2 versions: * English Single Byte Character Set version * English Double Byte Character Set version Syslog Event Message Support ============================ The 833IS can be configured to send Event Log message in real time to a Syslog server. Messages sent to the Syslog are assigned an error level that indicates the severity of the conditions. Some of the benefits of using the Syslog feature are as follows: * One Syslog server can be used for the retrieval and storage of Syslog messages from multiple 833IS servers and other devices that support Syslog in your network. * Syslog servers can store a large number of Sylog messages. * You can display the received Syslog messages based on time, host name or order received. Disconnect of Specific Users ============================ From the 833IS Manager or a Telnet command line interface a user will have the ability to disconnect a specific user from the 833IS. If using the 833 Manager, this function can be performed from the User Statistics screen. If using a Telnet command line interface, then the "clear _user username" command from the Privilege Exec mode would disconnect a user. Factory Default Changes ======================= * Users now have the ability to configure the 833IS server's Ethernet speed to 10 MB, 100 MB or auto detect. The default is auto detect. * The 833IS server is no longer required to be reset after system firmware is downloaded. You may immediately download a configuration to the 833IS server. * The 833IS server will not read any configuration if booted in factory default. This means any Manager setup configuration parameters entered from the front panel will be lost if the server is reset before downloading system firmware. * The 833IS server is no longer required to be reset in order for Manager setup configuration parameters entered from the front panel to take affect. These changes take effect immediately. Cisco Configuration Mode ======================== The Cisco configuration Mode is designed to allow personnel, trained in the installation and configuration of Cisco products, to manage and configure the 833IS using the same techniques applied to similar Cisco units. The same procedures and commands that are used to manage the installation and configuration of a Cisco device can be used to configure and manage the 833IS. Although the Cisco Configuration Mode for the 833IS is similar to managing Cisco products, there are several unique features and differences of the 833IS that the user should be mindful of. * The initial configuration of the 833IS is performed on the front panel instead of a direct serial connection to establish LAN connections * There is no equivalent Cisco "Setup" script to initially configure the unit. Therefore, it is recommended that the 833IS Manager, a Windows-base application, be used to create an initial configuration for the 833IS. The configuration can then be customized and updated using Cisco configuration Mode. * Although Cisco products allow access to internal resources such as queues and buffer sizes, Perle has protected these internal resources and restricts users from modifying them to maintain the integrity and quality of the product. * Cisco commands used to configure and manage the 833IS are based upon the command structure of Cisco IOS version 12. Equivalent Cisco commands may have additional parameters that are not present in the 833IS version. If these additional parameters are included with the command and are executed from a file, the parameters not supported will be ignored and error messages will be logged to a log file. These messages can be displayed using the "show _log" command. However, if commands are entered interactively through a Telnet session, an error message will be displayed to the user. * The Cisco command set does not accommodate all the configuration and management features of the 833IS. Therefore, Perle commands and parameters have been developed to modify these feature on the 833IS unit which are not present in a Cisco environment. The Perle commands and additional parameters use a similar syntax as Cisco commands and parameters but are uniquely identified by the "_" (underscore) character preceding the command or additional parameter. A complete set of supported Cisco and Perle commands are available on the Perle Web site www.perle.com. Please see Cisco Configuration Mode section in the 833IS User Guide for more detail.
