Perle Systems Case Study
Avery Weigh-Tronix
Chose Perle to Help Give their Customers Reliable Information
There is always a need for accurate weighing. From the roadside weighbridge checking 44-tonne trucks to the laboratory balance recording milligram quantities of chemicals, the measurement of weight plays a vital role in everyday activities.
As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of weighing equipment, Avery Weigh-Tronix has a comprehensive range from simple counting scales to large industrial applications. Avery Weigh-Tronix’s weighing equipment is used in areas such as supermarkets, airports, pharmaceuticals, construction, chemical, and quality control.
While it’s easy to read off an analogue scale or jot down a digital reading, repetitive weighing often demands an automated system. Avery Weigh-Tronix has developed tailored software packages to record, calculate, and transmit raw data to a central point. The latest weighing equipment comes with an RS-232 serial port to capture and transmit accurate weight readings in real time.
Perle’s SX Serial Cards provide Avery Weigh-Tronix the ideal solution for connecting weighing equipment and tramsitting weight data to computer software as part of a total solution.

The Perle SX consists of a PCI serial card and external 8-port RS-232 Device Concentrators. Thanks to their high reliability, no maintenance requirements, and sophisticated management features, Perle’s SX serial cards are perfect for the job.
In an ever progressing technology revolution, the Perle SX serial card enables the networking of multiple weighing stations that can be monitored from a central control room. This means a smoother flow of operation and less time being wasted manually recording data on the production floor.
Avery Weigh-Tronix uses Perle SX Serial Cards with its PlantPower quantity software for close control of pack fills in the food, drink, chemicals, and manufacturing industries. The serial cards link weigh stations to a stand-alone management PC or network. The software enables users to view real-time reports as well as managing filling operations.
The Avery Weigh-Tronix M725 data handling solution also uses Perle SX Serial Cards. The M725 software gives a breakdown of product or waste movement in factories. The Perle SX serial cards connect multiple weighing equipment back to a central control and reporting station. For example, eight scales can be connected to this sophisticated PC package where data is stored in a Microsoft Access database for sharing with other applications.
“Accurate weighing is at the forefront of many businesses today. We ensure this is achievable accurately and Perle plays a part in that.” David Edge, Product and Marketing Manager at Avery Weigh-Tronix.
