With their unique eyeware software active in several hundred locations across 35 states in the USA, Delta systems could lay claim to being the experts in turnkey computer installations for multi-store eyeware businesses.
Such a multi-site installation is at a Utah company where a centralized laboratory manufactures eyeglasses for 22 retail locations. User administrative and manufacturing operation terminals and printers are connected to an Intel pentium system running SCO Unix at central of?ce via a Perle SX Serial Card and RS232 connector boxes.
The adjacent retail outlet uses the Perle transparent print facility to run off point-of-sale receipts and tray tickets. The optical laboratory itself plugs in equipment such as the bar code scanner network for job tracking, the pattern generator, the frame tracer and the lens grinding generator. Accounts, purchasing and inventory control terminals, along with several printers, run off the remaining ports.
Perle is also at the company’s remote retail stores. Each runs XENIX with local POS terminal and printer connectivity being supplied by 4-port Perle Multi-port Cards.

Delta systems have installed their software and Perle serial connectivity in a dozen or so similar optical businesses, some with upwards of 160 retail stores. In addition they have also put Perle Serial Cards into areas such as wholesale pharmaceutical operations, paper bag manufacturing, electronics retailing, ship brokerage, furniture retailing; even into a blueprint company.
The President of Delta Systems says: “When we started using Perle many years ago, they were not well known in the USA. Today, on the Intel CPU computers that we have installed, about 90% of them have a Perle Serial Card.”
