A recent article from The Wall Street Journal pointed out that proximity to centers of data facility growth is a major factor impacting a tech company's success. Wilcon extends its reach in Southern California
Data center infrastructure company Wilcon is planning to debut its new California fiber-optic network in 2015, said Lightwave. A fresh 3,000 miles of cable will now run from San Diego to Los Angeles, boosting Wilcon's presence as a broadband Internet provider. In addition, the expansive network of cables will allow the company to service 1,000 new customers across the state. New connections available for colocation centers and data facilities will make up the lion's share of Wilcon's growing customer base. Clients will be able to access Ethernet and wavelength connections through the new Wilcon network as well.

Access to a superior Internet connection is a boon for companies, especially the tech-industry innovators that populate the business sector in Southern California. Access to the fiber-optic network will make it easier for companies to deliver 4K ultra-high definition content to customers, for instance. Google targets small businesses in Kansas City
On the other side of the country, Google is undergoing a fiber roll out of its own in Kansas City, according to CIO Today. Google's move to offer fiber to small businesses in Kansas is fitting, considering that the tech giant announced its original fiber roll out (and several subsequent delays) in the city. Businesses that take advantage of the new infrastructure will enjoy faster, more reliable Internet connection. However, this does not mean that each company will be able to afford a full fiber-optic upgrade.
