Get your media converters ready. Fiber-optic cabling systems are becoming a dominant consideration in the web hosting sector, and data center strategists may want to start makingmedia converter investments to establish a foundation for increased fiber deployment in their facilities. The Web Host Industry Reviewrecently reported that fiber-optic cabling installation has begun to gain some momentum around the world and itis returning to levels similar to those hit during the peak of the dot-com period. The end result is a situation in which web hosting companies can transform their services through fiber and offer functionality that matters to customers.

Fiber and the managed hosting sector
MAN infrastructure and other forms of optical networks can transform network capabilities in a region by giving hosting providers the capacity to support advanced data backup functionality. Industry expert Greg Kelly told the news source that fiber's rise has made the network format so predominant in the hosting sector that fiber has become a key part of real estate decisions. He likened the issue to manufacturing, where in a manufacturing-based economy organizations used to select building based on their loading docks. Hosting organizations are now making their investments based on facilities having access to fiber.

Kelly also pointed out that web hosting providers with solidfiber backhaul systems are able to serve customers both within and outside of metropolitan regions. He told The WHIR that many businesses have incredible data backup demands that push the to require sustained network performance as high as 300 Mbps for offsite, real-time backup functionality. In many cases, hosting providers with fiber can offer even faster speeds during the initial phase of a project to help with initial data transmission, then ramp down to 300 Mbps easily later for day-to-day operations.

Responding to fiber's rise
Telecoms and web hosting providers may need to position themselves to maximize the opportunity for fiber. For telecoms, this means building out fiber to the premises networks. In the case of hosting vendors, the issue could involve everything from strategic telecom partnerships to the installation of fiber backhaul networks and even internal fiber links in the data center to support rising performance demands. This makes investments in fiber to Ethernet media converters an essential consideration across both sectors and something that IT leaders should keep in mind as they develop broad connectivity strategies.

Perle has an extensive range of Managed and Unmanaged Fiber Media Converters to extended copper-based Ethernet equipment over a fiber optic link, multimode to multimode and multimode to single mode fiber up to 160km.
