The colocation industry has remained as active as ever worldwide, despite another year of reports heralding the coming of cloud as the end of traditional data storage. The shift has yet to come, and instead it seems that the opposite trend has occurred. Synergy Research Group's quarterly data showed that colocation revenues worldwide are increasing at a rate of 10 percent year - certain markets, like China, are expanding at double the international average, according to Data Center Knowledge. The rise of the cloud may have in fact encouraged companies to consider new modes of meeting all kinds of IT needs, encouraging more companies to invest in colocation.

Equinix on top of a surging market
Despite fierce competition among a long list of providers, Data Center Dynamics points out that Equinix is undoubtedly the most dominant player in the game. The colocation business already controls an influential market share in several of the largest colocation markets in the world. Many well-known colocation providers, including Verizon and CenturyLink, serve customer bases just a third of the size of the one belonging to Equinix. iTWire reported that Equinix recently expanded its business to Melbourne, Australia, as part of a long-term plan to reach 14 new markets in the Southern Pacific region. The company's ability to expand and make waves in new markets reveals just how global the need for more data storage has become.

Don't fix your storage if it isn't broken
Despite the rise of a newer, more technologically advanced rival in cloud storage, colocation centers have remained profitable by delivering the same reliable services. For some data centers, colocation offers greater redundancy and customer service than the cloud could provide. Other colocation centers thrive based on their proximity to businesses with large volumes of data to store. Besides, shifting to the cloud isn't the only way to make a company's data more accessible. Simple workarounds like the use of remote console servers can make it easy for long-distance employees to reach important work files.

Perle's wide range of 1 to 48 port Perle Console Servers provide data center managers and network administrators with secure remote management of any device with a serial console port. Plus, they are the only truly fault tolerant Console Servers on the market with the advanced security functionality needed to easily perform secure remote data center management and out-of-band management of IT assets from anywhere in the world.
