The Big Data in IoT for Business

Max Burkhalter

Big data is becoming a big influence on IoT.

When we consider "big data," we tend to think of it as a recent phenomenon. In reality, the use of big data is more age-old than we might think. The term first entered the vernacular in the 1990s – often attributed to John R. Mashey, an employee at Silicon Graphics. Since then, the concept has continued to grow in importance and influence, especially in the technology industry. And as the internet became mainstream in the late 1990s, concurrent with the rise of cloud computing, big data has become an increasingly central part of our online experiences.

But, how does it come into play with the internet of things (IoT)?

Iot refers to the network of physical objects or 'things' that are connected to the internet, allowing them to collect and share data. With this technology, everyday objects can become connected and seemlngly intelligent. From smart homes to connected cars and more, the IoT can be used in a wide variety of contexts. And thanks to big data, this technology has become even more powerful.

As a result, companies are seeing big data as a way to get even more out of their IoT investments. It's not just about using the IoT for practical purposes, such as controlling your home appliances from your smartphone. It's also about using it to improve business processes and uncover new opportunities.

For example, a manufacturing company can use IoT to track the performance of their products and use the data to improve production processes and quality control. With more information available, companies can make better decisions and, ultimately, become more profitable. An IoT device, such as a handheld POS system, can be used to track inventory and automatically notify you when stock is low. Other scenarios include using IoT to track the health of patients in a hospital, or to identify areas where energy is being wasted in a commercial building.

While it's tempting to think that IoT is just about connecting devices to the Internet, the truth is that there is a lot more to it than that. The big data revolution is happening, and it's happening right now. As more and more data is generated, there will be more opportunities to analyze it and use it to improve organizational performance. The real question is, what can you do with all of the information you have at your fingertips?
