The Ping Probe Watchdog functionality provides continuous 7/24 monitoring of equipment with automated power cycle recovery should equipment become unresponsive to periodic ping probes.
In remote branch locations, it is imperative that IT equipment remain up and running at all times. This could be a local file server, POS, accounting, CRM or an ERP system. A ping probe, which is a standards-based ICMP echo request packet, is simple tool that exists to test the availability of Ethernet based equipment. If a device does not respond in a timely fashion to a ping probe sent to its Ethernet port, there is a good chance that the equipment has failed. Resolution and recovery can be made through access by administrators via an Out-of-Band connection to its serial console port or an automated watchdog device can monitor and then take corrective action as soon as a problem occurs.
“The Ping Probe Watchdog feature gives you the peace of mind that downtime of your networked equipment will be minimal.” Says Julie Mc Daniel, Vice President Marketing at Perle Systems. “As soon as the device is detected as unresponsive, the power cycle takes place and normal operation can resume.”
