Gigaom notes that several companies are ramping up efforts to segregate rack hardware based on workload and function. This configuration, also known as a pod and core infrastructure, allows facilities to streamline the performance of their data center.
The customizable data center
The pod and core infrastructure is especially useful now that IT teams have greater freedom to tweak hardware and software performance around the needs of their primary applications. Companies can likewise reorganize the physical infrastructure of their data center based on storage and processing tasks performed by each grouping, or pod. These pods are then connected to a central network that handles the distribution and flow of data. Pod and core organization also simplifies the process of scaling the data center. IT teams are able to assess the specific performance flaws of each pod and design solutions that meet the company's exact performance needs.

The ability to scale data centers to meet user demand is an important priority for a company's IT department. Egnyte, a fail-sharing firm that runs out of three data centers, runs separate pods to handle computing, storage and processing. Additional pods are run by the company to perform quality assurance tests or pilot new networking solutions.These design strategies highlight the possibilities available to IT teams through the core and pod architecture.
