RS485 to Ethernet Converters

Transmit RS485 Data over Ethernet

RS485 to Ethernet Converters connect devices with RS485 serial interfaces to a local area network for transmission of serial data over wired or wireless Ethernet. By converting RS485 data signals into Ethernet (TCP or UDP) packets, and vice versa, they enable reliable data transmission to other devices or network server applications. This is accomplished by encapsulating the RS485 data in Ethernet packets in a manner that best fits the type of data being transported.

RS485 to Ethernet Converters have a physical wired or wireless (LTE or WiFi) network connection on one side, and one or more RS485 serial ports on the other side. They are designed to ensure that when you access attached devices over a network the connection operates as if you are locally connected to the RS485 port with a direct cable connection. This is perfect for manufacturing, energy production, industrial fieldbus applications, and industrial control systems, where transmitting data from devices that use the standard RS485 data communications port is common. While some RS485 to Ethernet Converters can be very simple devices, it is best practice to use one with advanced security functionality, data encryption, and user authentication to ensure network data transmissions, and access to network equipment is protected.

Using RAW TCP Sockets

A raw TCP socket connection which can be initiated from the IOLAN serial to Ethernet converter or from the remote host/server. This can either be on a point-to-point or shared basis where a serial device can be shared amongst multiple devices. TCP sessions can be initiated either from the TCP server application or from the Perle IOLAN serial to Ethernet converter.

Using RAW UDP Sockets

For use with UDP based applications, Perle IOLANs can convert serial data for transport across UDP packets either on a point-to-point basis or shared across multiple devices.

Serial Tunneling between two Serial Devices

Serial Tunneling enables you to establish a link across Ethernet to a serial port on another IOLAN. Both IOLAN serial ports must be configured for Serial Tunneling (typically one serial port is configured as a Tunnel Server and the other serial port as a Tunnel Client).
