Serial to IP Converters
Connect to a Serial Device over your IP network or the Internet
Serial to IP converters are hardware devices that enable you to remotely access, control, and manage any serial device over an IP network or the Internet. They are used to convert serial asynchronous data from an RS232, RS422, or RS485 port to TCP/IP or UDP packets giving you authentic serial communications across Ethernet as if you are locally connected to the serial port with a direct cable connection. This is perfect in M2M communication where client access needs to be made independent of any operating system or proprietary protocol.
Serial to IP converters are typically found with one or more serial ports on one side and and a physical wired 10/100/1000 Ethernet or wireless (LTE or WiFi) network interface on the other side. While some Serial to IP Converters can be very simple devices, it is best practice to use one with advanced security functionality, data encryption, and user authentication to ensure network data transmissions, and access to network equipment is protected.

What to consider when choosing a Serial to IP Converter
Serial async start/stop characters in 7, 8 or 9 bit formats are received by the Serial to IP converter and then encapsulated in TCP or UDP packets. These packets are then forwarded to a remote software based IP socket application, another serial device connected to a peer Serial to IP converter on the network, or to a virtual COM port redirector software utility like Perle’s TruePort.
Perle’s TruePort COM port redirector appears as a local serial COM or TTY port to a serial application including RS232 control signals. This enables a serial based application to communicate directly over an IP Network or Internet connection without changes to the application software. TruePort is supported on all major operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Unix and is included with the purchases of all Perle IOLAN Serial to IP converters.
Tto ensure that the original serial data stream is received by the other end point, it is important that Serial to IP converters have sufficient processing power to handle high throughput serial data. They must also have the ability to properly packetize the data onto TCP/IP packets. Perle IOLAN's have the fastest processors avalable on the market today to ensure low-latency and no packet losses.
And, Perle IOLAN's, with TrueSerial technology, are the only products to guarantee authentic serial communications and maintain device protocol integrity across Ethernet.
Serial to Ethernet Applications
Out-of-Band Console Management
Secure access to USB or RJ45 RS232 console ports on routers, switches, etc, via inband Reverse Telnet / SSL / SSH or out-of-band over integrated LTE, WiFi, or modem for multiple alternate access methods when the network is down. Out-of-Band Management: What is it and why do I need it?
Serial Tunneling between two Serial Devices
Serial Tunneling enables you to establish a link across Ethernet to a serial port on another IOLAN. Both IOLAN serial ports must be configured for Serial Tunneling (typically one serial port is configured as a Tunnel Server and the other serial port as a Tunnel Client).
Create a Virtual COM Port
Serial ports can be connected to network servers or workstations running Perle's TruePort software operating as a virtual COM port. Sessions can be initiated either from the Perle IOLAN or from the TruePort COMport Re-director Utility.
